Joe went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2011. He was 92 years old.
Joe was born October 22, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of the late Joseph D. and Bertha D. Smith. Joe served in France and Belgium during World War II with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany from December, 1944 to April, 1945. Joe went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2011. He was 92 years old.
Joe was born October 22, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of the late Joseph D. and Bertha D. Smith. Joe served in France and Belgium during World War II with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany from December, 1944 to April, 1945. Following the war, he returned to Charlotte and for 42 years, worked in the Parts Department of Town & Country Ford. On March 20, 1976, he married Barbara Hathcock of Charlotte and enjoyed 35 years of marriage. Joe was a member of Plaza Presbyterian Church for over 60 years and active in the Ex-POW Club of Metrolina.
Joe is survived by his wife, Barbara; a step-daughter, Sandra Brown and husband, Jim, of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Chris Brown and wife, Jennifer, of Chesapeake, VA, Jennifer Maggiore and husband, Joe, of Virginia Beach, VA and Kimberly Nieter and husband, Brent, of Chesapeake, VA; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Nichols, Mildred "Bill" Chambers, Ruth McClanahan and Francis Worrell.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Monday, May 16, 2011 at Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service, with a Celebration of Life Service following at 1:00 PM. The Reverend Dr. Jim Brown will officiate. Interment with military rites will be at Sharon Memorial Park.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Wilora Lake Health Care for taking such good care of Joe during his stay there.
